All the other musicians in the orchestra are working together to provide the foundation for the solo. Moving as one, the soloist and her director are shaping the music into a beautiful experience for themselves, their fellow orchestra members, and for their audience.
You can almost imagine the conductor's hands moving to guide the musicians to expand the theme of the composition, and the soloist responding as they take the piece to a higher level of beauty and expression.
